Kashmiri Papier-mâché Lidded Box

This lidded box is a true masterpiece, requiring a skilled artist nearly one year to complete its intricate painting. It features a felted red interior lining and the medallion on the underside of the lid echoes the box’s extraordinary outer motif. Kashmiri papier-mâché is a centuries-old traditional craft originating in the Kashmir Valley of India, involving the shaping of paper pulp into objects such as boxes, vases, bowls, and decorative items. These pieces are then hand-painted with intricate floral, geometric, and nature-inspired motifs using fine brushes, and often finished with lacquer to produce vibrant, richly detailed works of art.
